Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) encompasses many different practices, including acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion (burning an herb above the skin to apply heat to acupuncture points), Chinese herbal medicine, tui na (Chinese therapeutic massage sometimes known as acupressure), dietary therapy, and tai chi and qi gong (practices that combine specific movements or postures, coordinated breathing, and mental focus). TCM is rooted in the ancient philosophy of Taoism and dates back more than 2,500 years. In addition to it’s foundation in ancient Chinese medical practice, acupuncture is also informed by modern medicine and there are many recent random controlled trials reporting the efficacy of acupuncture in today’s world.

One of the basic tenets of TCM holds that the body’s vital energy (chi or qi) circulates through channels, called meridians, that have branches connected to bodily organs and functions. The needles, cups or massage techniques move and re balance the qi to enhance health and general wellness.
