Buccal Massage - What’s All The Fuss About?

You may have seen my recent TV3 Ireland AM appearance where we spoke about buccal massage. If not you can check out the highlights here!

Buccal massage has been trending on TikTok and is a firm favourite with celebrities.

At its core, intra-oral buccal massage is a technique where the therapist works from inside the mouth to alleviate the tension in the facial muscles and bring more balance to the bones of the skull. This might sound unconventional, but the results speak for themselves: a more defined facial contour, reduced tension, lifted cheekbones, smoother nasolabial folds, and reduced wrinkles.

Where did this trend come from?

Intra-oral techniques are nothing new, they have been effectively used for decades by osteopaths for various therapeutic treatments. In the early 2000s, some of those movements were adapted for aesthetic use by the legendary French cosmetologist and biochemist Joëlle Ciocco. Her trend-setting buccal techniques were enthusiastically welcomed by the beauty industry and gave rise to the modern-day approach to intra-oral treatments for non-invasive facelift.

Benefits of buccal massage

Back in 2007 a famous French plastic surgeon Dr Claude Le Louarn has published a pioneering study where he proved that retained tension in the facial muscles is the number one reason for premature ageing of the face. While the aesthetic benefits of buccal massage are evident, its advantages go beyond just beauty. The technique aids in relieving TMJ tension, alleviating sinus congestion, stimulating healthy lymph drainage and improving tissue innervation making this an ideal treatment choice for people with Bell's Palsy Syndrome, Ramsey Hunt Syndrome, post-stroke clients etc.

If you are interested in trying Buccal Massage we offer it as part of our Neolifting Facial Massage treatment, and also as part of Synergy Facial Acupuncture.
